# STOP/START CLUSTER

The following command can be used to start or stop a given cluster.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Any job or table that is configured to run on a stopped cluster will not run. Jobs and tables that depend on jobs that are running on a stopped cluster will also be blocked.
{% endhint %}

## Syntax

```sql
{ START | STOP } CLUSTER <cluster_name>
```

## Stop or start a cluster from the UI

### Stop cluster

To stop a running cluster, from the Upsolver main menu, click **Clusters**. On the **Clusters** page, select the cluster you want to stop from the list in the table. This opens the monitoring page. In the top right-hand corner of the screen, click the **Stop Cluster** button to display the confirmation modal. Choose **Stop Cluster**, and the cluster stops with immediate effect, or **Cancel** to exit without saving changes.

Optionally, you can click **Copy**, to copy the code and paste this into a worksheet if you want to run it manually.

{% hint style="danger" %}
**Note**

A cluster that is paused for longer than the source retention period may result in data loss.
{% endhint %}

### Start cluster

To re-start a stopped cluster, from the **Clusters** page, click on the cluster you want to resume, and then click the **Start Cluster** button. This opens the confirmation modal. Click **Start Cluster** to start the cluster with immediate effect, or **Cancel** to exit without saving changes.

Alternatively, copy the code into a worksheet and run this manually.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://upsolver.gitbook.io/content/reference-1/sql-commands/clusters/stop-start-cluster.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
